How to stop free trials turning into paid plans
A free trial usually asks for a card and starts charging the day it ends. You do not need to avoid trials. You need to know when each one ends, and to act a little before that.

When you start a trial
- Read the end date on the sign-up page or in the first email. Save that email.
- Note the price it turns into, and whether that price is monthly or yearly.
- Set a reminder for two or three days before the end date, not on the day.
- Check how to cancel while you still remember where you signed up.
Cancel early, and check you keep access
Many services let you cancel straight away and keep the trial until its end date, so you can cancel on day one and nothing is charged. Apple says to cancel at least 24 hours before an App Store trial ends. Others end the trial as soon as you cancel, so check first.
Where you signed up matters. A trial started in an iPhone or Android app is cancelled in the App Store or Google Play, not on the company's website.
Why calendar reminders fail
A calendar reminder works only if you set it, and people are least careful in the moment they sign up. It also knows nothing about what happens next, such as a trial you extended or a plan you changed.
Working from the receipt avoids that. The welcome email already states the dates and price, so a tool can read them for you.
How Subscriptrack handles trials
Forward your trial confirmation or connect Outlook, and Subscriptrack marks it as a trial with its end date. You get an alert 1, 3 or 7 days before, as you choose, either when it comes up or in one weekly digest. You can also add trial ends to Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar with a private link.
It does not cancel anything for you. It tells you in time, and it links to the steps for 198 services.
See everything you pay for
Subscriptrack reads your receipts and builds one list of your subscriptions, with renewal reminders and no bank login.
Questions
- How many days before a trial ends should I cancel?
- Two or three days is a safe margin. Apple asks for at least 24 hours on App Store trials, and some companies need more, so check the terms.
- Can I cancel a free trial straight away?
- Often, yes, and many services keep the trial running until its end date. Some end it immediately, so check before you cancel if you still want to try the service.
- What if I have already been charged?
- Cancel right away so it does not renew again, then ask the company for a refund. Many will refund a charge from a few days ago, but they may not have to.
